Macau Tourism Guide Association enhances the Macau tourism development by using TOEIC® tests

Ms. Angelina Wu, the President of Macau Tourism Guide Association, visited The School of Continuing Study, City University of Macau on 9 March 2012. The Vice Rector of the City University of Macau, Prof. Aliana Leong and Mr. Vincent Cheng, Manager of Smart Education, the ETS representative in Hong Kong and Macau, gave the warmest welcome to Ms. Angelina Wu. Three parties aimed to boost the tourism industry of Macau by improving the English standards of the tourist guides.

The President of Macau Tourism Guide Association, Ms. Wu, expressed that having fluent English is crucial for tourist guides as the tourism industry of Macau is growing rapidly. The purpose of this meeting is to find ways to improve the English communication skills of the entire industry. The main focus of TOEIC® tests is “everyday English”; Macau Tourism Guide Association would like to make use of the TOEIC® tests as a tool to measure the English ability of tourist guides. They hope this can help to improve the English efficiency and the service quality in this industry.

The direction of tourist guide training program and enhancement of English communication were discussed in the meeting. Also, three parties exchanged information and opinions about the issue of demand forecasting, manpower management and long-term development of Macau tourism industry. They aimed to deliver better experience to tourists by improving the English communication skills of the whole industry.

ETS, an industry leader in English-language assessment for over 60 years, designed the TOEIC® tests (Test of English for International Communication) to measure workplace English skills. The TOEIC® tests are designed for non-native English speakers. The test scores reflect the extent of communication skills in English within the global workplace. The content of TOEIC® tests is based on actual examples of spoken and written English collected from around the world. Test takers are not required to have specialized knowledge or vocabulary. For over 30 years, the TOEIC® tests have set the standard for assessing English-language skills needed in the workplace. Over 10,000 organizations in 120 countries rely on TOEIC® tests to recruit, promote and train employees. In 2010, more than 6,000,000 TOEIC® tests were administered, making the TOEIC® tests the largest and most widely used English-language assessment worldwide.
