The month of May turned out to be a very busy one for ETS Canada, who signed deals with the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) and the Canadian transport company Bombardier to use the TFI™ test for admissions and training purposes, respectively.

Bombardier, one of the top three manufacturers of aerospace equipment in the world, has been using both the TOEIC® and TFI tests for the last eight months for recruitment purposes and recently initiated a mandate requiring all employees to be evaluated in either French or English using the TFI or TOEIC® tests. Starting with Bombardier’s Montreal headquarters, 250 tests (135 TFI, 110 TOEIC) were administered throughout the month of May in order to evaluate and place employees into language training courses.

Bombardier has recently placed a strong emphasis on the French and English language proficiency of their employees based on current job demands. By using the TFI test, Bombardier will be able to track the progress of employees in the language training courses and establish a proficiency goal in order to maximize employee efficiency. After Montreal, Bombardier plans to deploy their employee testing program in their China, Morocco, Mexico and U.S. locations. With the growing interest for evaluation abroad, ETS Canada has thus swiftly enabled a multinational opportunity across the EPN.

3With the Université de Montréal being their biggest TFI client to date, the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) win is sure to grow TFI volumes significantly, as the university has over 42,000 students and is the largest French-speaking university in the world. The approximately 3,000 students at UQAM from 85 different countries do not reflect the actual number of students who applied and were not accepted. Prior to the TFI test, UQAM used a homemade test that they felt failed to correctly gauge French proficiency. With the new contract, UQAM will now require a TFI score of ≥700 from all international student applicants prior to receiving their student visa.

UQAM has been doing business with ETS Canada since 2004, using the TOEIC® tests (score ≥750) as one of four English-proficiency evaluators required for business students to graduate. Though English is not the predominantly spoken language in Montreal, UQAM aims to prepare their students to the best of their ability, particularly when a student is entering a field where English proficiency is necessary.

With these significant wins for TFI, ETS Canada supports the growth initiatives for TFI worldwide including the accreditation of TFI for naturalization in France and some initiatives in Asia.

What is the TOEIC® test?

ETS, an industry leader in English-language assessment for over 60 years, designed the TOEIC® tests to measure workplace English skills. For more than 30 years, over 10,000 organizations (businesses, government agencies, universities and vocational schools) in 120 countries rely on the TOEIC® tests to demonstrate English proficiency and help them get ahead of the competition. More than 6 million TOEIC® tests were administrated in 2011.

That is the TFI™ test?

The TFI™ test is a French-language proficiency test for people whose native language is not French. The TFI™ Test results show how well you communicate in French in business and academic environments.
