Canon Hong Kong Uses TOEIC® Tests for Evaluation

showroomCanon Hong Kong Company Limited (“Canon”) was searching for a fair, valid and reliable 4-skill language-assessment that could accurately measure the English abilities of their recruits. They have had the opportunity to use other assessment tests in the past, but found that none of them gave a true reflection of one’s skills in the English language. Smart Education, the TOEIC representative in Hong Kong, reached out to the company and was able to provide a solution. Within just two short weeks of their initial meeting, Smart Education successfully helped Canon conduct their first TOEIC® Listening and Reading test and Speaking and Writing test to their trainees. TOEIC’s comprehensive can-do analysis, flexible institutional program arrangement and Smart Education’s professional services are critical success factors that helped close this deal.

Each year, Canon provides a Canon Management Trainee Program to university graduates in hopes of attracting young talent to the team. The program is designed to guide and support the career path of these individuals and build them into future business leaders. To further excel in their career Canon believes that their future business leaders should possess excellent communication skills in the English language, and therefore administer an assessment to their candidates through the program. Last year they administered a different test, but felt that the exam fell short of their needs of an accurate evaluation.

Canon decided to turn to the TOEIC program for 2012, and with the help and support from Smart Education, they administered the first TOEIC exams to their trainees’ on July 27th at Canon’s headquarters in Hong Kong. The tests were conducted smoothly and Canon was very pleased with the results. The scores not only enrich the portfolios of their candidates, but allow Canon to track their language improvement progress and therefore better understand their training needs.

As a result, the TOEIC program has been a success for Canon and their management program. Smart Education will maintain working with the company to ensure the exams continue to meet their needs. In addition, Smart Education is working with Canon to use TOEIC to establish the English language standards for different positions in the company. With time, Smart Education hopes to make the TOEIC assessment scores a hiring requirement for future recruitment at Canon.
