Major Breakthrough for Studying in Japan! JPT Formally Recognized by Japan’s Immigration Services Agency (ISA)

Smart Education, the official representative of the JPT (Japanese Proficiency Test) in Hong Kong and Macau, is proud to announce a landmark update for students and professionals planning to pursue higher education in Japan.

The Immigration Services Agency (ISA) of the Ministry of Justice, Japan, has officially updated its list of recognized Japanese language proficiency qualifications. The JPT is now formally listed under the criteria for "Japanese language ability for admission to higher education institutions." Furthermore, the ISA has explicitly set a score of 525 points or higher as the benchmark for eligibility.

Official Recognition: JPT for Student Visas

According to the latest guidelines published on the Ministry of Justice website, the JPT is now a primary credential for assessing the language proficiency of international students.

For Hong Kong students aiming to enroll in Japanese universities, graduate schools, junior colleges, or vocational colleges (Senshu Gakko), this means that a JPT score of 525+ carries the same legal weight as a JLPT N2 certificate for visa application purposes.

Why the JPT is a Game-Changer for Hong Kong Students:

  1. Monthly Testing (12 Times a Year): Unlike the JLPT, which is held only twice a year, the JPT is conducted monthly in Hong Kong and Macau. Students no longer need to wait six months to prove their proficiency.
  2. Rapid Results: Score reports are typically issued within two weeks of the exam, allowing students to meet tight university application and visa deadlines.
  3. Precise Scoring (0–990): The JPT’s point-based system provides a more granular view of a student's progress compared to the "Pass/Fail" nature of other exams.

Exclusive Benefit for Macau Candidates: PDAC Subsidy Available

The Macau Continuing Education Development Plan (PDAC) aims to create favorable conditions for lifelong learning, encouraging Macau residents aged 15 or above to enhance their personal qualities and skills through further studies or professional certifications. The JPT has been officially included in the 2026–2029 "Continuing Education Development Plan" Examination Catalogue, allowing eligible Macau residents to sit for the JPT exam free of charge (via subsidy).

Macau SAR residents who reach the age of 15 on or before December 31 of any year between 2026 and 2029 are eligible. Candidates may submit their application via the " Personal Education Account" online inquiry and application system within 180 days after the examination, and no later than July 31, 2029.
